Joel Sternfeld - Walking the High Line

I have been mulling over a post about the High Line for a while now, and have gathered quite a few links about the history of the elevated railway that recently re-opened as a wonderful park here in New York City. My favorite images of the structure have always been from Joel Sternfeld’s Walking the High Line series. You can see a nice slideshow of the photographs on the High Line website.

Justin James Reed reviews Westward the Course of Empire

Mark Ruwedel’s Westward the Course of Empire has been hovering near the top of my wishlist for quite a while now. Alas, my budget is limited, so I must tide myself over with reviews like Justin James Reed’s in the newest issue of Ahorn Magazine until I can afford my own copy.

Joel Meyerowitz: Legacy

Joel Meyerowitz: Legacy

I just came across a new body of work from Joel Meyerowitz that will be published by Aperture this fall. Legacy: The Preservation of Wilderness in New York City Parks contains 250 images from New York City’s parks and wild spaces, and from what little I’ve seen, it looks pretty spectacular. The subject of wilderness contained within urban areas is something I have been fascinated by for a long time, and I’m sure I’ll see a lot of familiar places. The book also contains information about the parks such as maps and historical information.

Expanding Horizons: Painting and Photography of American and Canadian Landscape 1860-1918

A note to my friends in Montreal: if you haven’t already, be sure to see Expanding Horizons before it closes on September 27. It looks like an outstanding survey of turn-of-the-century Canadian and American landscape art, and I really wish I could see it in person.

Tim Briner

This week at Too Much Chocolate, I interview Brooklyn photographer Tim Briner about his Boonville series. It is beautiful and very thoughtful work, and I was happy to get some insight into Tim’s experiences while working on the project. I think you will enjoy reading it as well.

Infinite Summer

Infinite Summer

Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace

And now for something completely different:

I am participating in a global, Internet-based book club this summer, dedicated to reading the novel Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace. It is a daunting task, at more than a thousand pages, and one I have tried to start more than once. This time around, though, I will have the support of a huge online community in the Infinite Summer project, and a plan: 75 pages a week, plus endnotes, from June 21st through September 22nd.

My Schoolboy Crush: Carleton Watkins

My Schoolboy Crush: Carleton Watkins

Have you ever had the experience of learning a new word, only to hear it everywhere for a little while? It’s possible that I just wasn’t paying attention before, but it seems like I have been hearing Carleton Watkins’ name everywhere these days. I first noticed his photographs at the Framing a Century exhibition at the Met last fall. I had seen a few of his photographs in books, but seeing them in person really caught my attention. His photographs seemed to be vibrating at a different frequency than the other images in the show.
