I spent some time at the Brooklyn Museum this weekend and was reminded of how great their collection is. I discovered a few paintings that I’ve overlooked in the past, and found a new appreciation for some old favorites. Brooklyn doesn’t have the largest or deepest collection, by any means, but they’ve got some real knockouts.

You would be forgiven for thinking, based upon my recent output on this blog, that I’ve packed it in. In fact, I’ve simply packed up all of my belongings and moved down the block, which took much more time and effort than I anticipated. It continues to do so, in fact, since I sit here surrounded by boxes I haven’t even cracked open yet. All of this work has been taking up most of my creative energy at the moment, and leaving me with little time for anything else.

I guess you could call this Cézanne 2.0. What’s the photographic equivalent of Cubism? Can you do it with a straight photograph, or does it have to be manipulated?

Well, Millstone and Cistern Under Trees, 1892
There are quite a few Cézannes that I would consider favorites, but seeing this painting in particular at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia earlier this year had an incredibly profound effect on me.
