These urban shots feel very specific, maybe too much so? This shot seems to be about the bakery which leads to the question why should I care about that bakery? What about taking 3 giant steps back next time before releasing the shutter? If you try it, I promise I’ll do the same next time I’m about to make a photo.
Blake – this actually started as a wider shot, and ended up with me coming in quite a bit to frame it. The extraneous scenery wasn’t really helping.
I know what you’re saying, though. It was taken from a weird angle, because I wanted to get the highway in there, too. So I end up with this kind of half-scenic, half specific image and I’m not sure it does either very well.
If I had to pick a single element about this photo that I love, it’s the signs in the window. So maybe I’ll go back and take a closer look at those, and stop inside and talk to the owners while I’m at it.
I went out this morning and kept what you said in mind. Whenever I found a spot I liked, I made sure to take a few steps back. I also took a few steps forward just for good measure. It’s something I usually do anyway, but I was more conscious about it this time. In the end you were right, coming back a few feet from where I was initially standing seemed to make a better photo. I’ll let you know how it works out.

The portrait of the lottery guy is great.
