I have been looking at a lot of Lee Friedlander’s landscape work lately, especially The Desert Seen and the Frederick Law Olmsted Landscapes. Both are highly recommended. Friedlander’s photographs are so intense, they practically vibrate right off the page. Their complexity can make them hard to understand at first; they can sometimes be so visually sharp that they hurt your eyes.

I am very happy with these photographs, but I worry that they are veering a bit too far into formulaic territory. I want to see past the most obvious photographs and get to the ones that vibrate.
