A New Year’s Gift
I have a lovely little 5×5 platinotype of this photo from Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx that I would like to give away as a New Year’s gift to a reader of this blog. I will choose one person randomly from the comments on this post to receive the print—just leave a comment letting me know what your favorite photography book, show, or event of 2008 was, and I will select a winner on Friday.
New Photos
Mill Basin, Brooklyn
Here are a few new photos from the Outer Lands series. I have really enjoyed working with color film these last couple of weeks; there are photos I have not taken in the past because I knew they just wouldn’t work in black and white. There is a certain kind of subtlety that gets lost in black and white, and it has been a fun challenge to try to capture it.
Outer Lands
Mill Basin, Brooklyn, from the series Outer Lands
Today is the winter solstice—the longest night of the year. Many cultures treat the solstice as a holiday, a tradition which dates back to ancient times. It is no coincidence that many contemporary holidays also take place in late December, and that many of those holidays involve lights and candles. While it is dark outside, I hope you are keeping warm and sharing time with loved ones.
New Directions 2009
I am very happy to announce that I have been selected to be a part of New Directions, Wall Space Gallery’s 2009 juried exhibition.
Wall Space represents a few photographers I admire quite a bit, including Aline Smithson and Joseph O. Holmes. I am not familiar with most of the other names on the list of participating photographers, but I would like to offer special congratulations to Bill Vaccaro, who I have come to know over email these last few months, and Lane Collins, who I met on Twitter, of all places!
Passage, Levens Hall, photograph by Beth Dow
If you are asking yourself “Is Dalton going to post every time Beth Dow has a new edition available on 20×200?”, then you are 100% correct. I fallen hard in love with this one as I have so many of Beth’s photographs, and I just bought the medium size. I think this one is coming with me to work, because we are running out of wall space at home, and I love to make my co-workers envious.
