If by chance you ever think about selling some more platinum/palladium prints I would be interested. I still enjoy the print you sold me.

Hey Dalton,

As a big fan of Rackstraw Downes I highly recommend you try and find a copy of "Under The Gowanus and Razor-Wire Journal" by Downes. It's out of print but should be able to find at a good art library.

p.s. as the owner of a 107 year house I welcome you to the club.

Now I'm thinking I should sell my Coolscan and buy the Imacon! I haven't shot much of any medium format in almost two years, and I've been suffering with scanning on the V700. And of course I could scan MF and LF both on the Imacon.

I will have to do some research....

Hi Dalton,

thanks for your answer. Your findings resemble my own and I think we have to deal with that Epson scanner for a while or use a professional scan service from time to time.

Regarding that Imacon you linked to: the price is still high, but not so much out of range than the 20.000 for an X5. And if you can get your hands on a used Coolscan 9000 here in Germany you must be willing to spend up to 3.000 EUR for it - much more than the price it was sold by Nikon once ago. So if one is able to spend that money he sure should select such an Imacon and not that Coolscan, especially if he wants to scan 4x5. If business improves maybe I can catch one in the future. But first one has to find out how good that older Imacons really perform.

Downes' treatment of perspective is one of his hallmarks. He has said “As I turned to my left, without moving my feet, the verticals began to tilt: the more I moved the steeper they tilted…. The positions and movements of the body as the the artists looks and works are factors that are implicated in the way space is perceived and depicted.”

I've found it surprising how 'natural' the tilting horizons and curved beams appear. Take a look at this image:
http://www.hamptons.com/gallery/article/11092b.jpg
To my eye that accurately portrays how we perceive telegraph wires when we're stood in that relation to them. A fixed lens camera obviously doesn't see like that. (Perhaps the closest approximation might be a panning camera with the lens tilted up or down).

By the way I forgot to mention his book "In Relation to the Whole: Three Essays from Three Decades, 1973, 1981, and l996." Well worth a read if you can find a copy.

Thanks Howard,
I will give that interview a listen. I'm sure it will be enlightening.

I went back out to ballfield in Red Hook this weekend after seeing Downes' painting from that location. The perspective in his painting is a significant departure from reality. I had considered photographing it as a reference, but the actual scene is so different that I'm not sure what it would prove. It's a bit like the photographs from the locations of Cezanne's paintings that I <a href="http://daltonrooney.com/weblog/2009/landscape-into-art/" rel="nofollow">wrote about last year</a>. Very interesting to be able to compare the actual location to his painting and think about the decisions he made while working on it.
